Braised Chicken Thighs

Now this is actually braising chicken, unlike Hadi's Braised Chicken Rice from last time :P As a reminder, braising means browning the chicken in oil, then simmering in a sauce to cook the chicken properly. Granted, Justin didn't actually know it was braising, but wanted to call it brying instead, i.e. boiling and frying. Foiling is already taken, so maybe froiling? :P Haha, anyway... here you go!

What you need:
3 chicken thighs
1 onion, sliced finely
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons barbecue sauce
1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
Worcestershire sauce
Chilli powder
Chicken Stock
Black Pepper
Garlic Powder
Sesame oil

What you do:

  1. Mix the honey, barbecue sauce and hoisin sauce, as well as a generous sprinkling of Worcestershire sauce in a small bowl. Marinate the chicken for at least 2 hours.
  2. Dry fry the onions in a hot wok, for about 2 minutes. Add the chicken and pan fry all over until browned. Reserve any remaining marinade. The chicken juices should come out and soak the onions (yum~ :P)
  3. Add the chicken marinade to the pan. Sprinkle some chilli powder, garlic powder and sesame oil. Season well with chicken stock and black pepper.
  4. Cover the pan and simmer on slow heat for about an hour, until chicken is tender.

Hadi and Justin really liked this dish, supposedly because the chicken was really well-done and tender. They kept on yapping about it. Right... I agree that the chicken was nicely cooked, but that's no reason to get over-enthusiastic over it... But anyway, yeah, the chicken was great, as you might have gathered. Haha. In fact, Justin said it was *almost* like something I would cook. Haha, that's how much they like my cooking ;) Or at least, how much they think its better than theirs :P

But, actually, I much prefer yesterday's Sweet Chilli Chicken, although they tasted quite similar, really. Hadi and Justin thought it was really flavoursome, but I liked yesterday's "subtle blending of flavours" (yes, I like that phrase! XD) much much better. This tasted like your average chicken dish. True, I couldn't quite catch any particular taste, but it tasted like what you would usually get in a barbecue. Except this is not barbecued, of course. To call it Braised Barbecue Chicken might be a bit of an oxymoron... ;) It looks good though, I have to admit that. Browning the chicken in the earlier bit gave it a nice golden-brown patch.

But anyway, Justin also cooked a vegetable side dish (you can just see it on the picture) but the veggies were just one of those ready to cook packets. I'm not sure what he added, but unfortunately it wasn't that big a success. But still edible though, and like I've said so many times, that's all that matters :D

Quote of the day: A good cook is like a sorceress that dispenses happiness

Awwwww.... That's a nice one :D
