What better way to usher in the new year, than with a "cake" that will break all your freshly-minted resolutions "to lose weight" into a hundred pieces. I say "cake" because this isn't truly a cake. It looks like a cake (almost), but is completely different. No flour, loads and loads of chocolate and, of course, Maltesers! Very yummy? Yep, very much so! Very calorific? Oh yes, I very much believe so! Very rich and absolutely decadent! So, how strong is YOUR willpower? ;) Here we go!
What you need:
200g milk chocolate
100g butter
3 tablespoons golden syrup/honey
200g Maltesers
200g digestive biscuits, finely crushed (I used chocolate-covered ones)
What you do:
- Melt the chocolate, butter and syrup/honey together in a bowl in a microwave. Stir well in between, to prevent burning.
- Add the Maltesers and crushed biscuits to the chocolate mixture and mix quickly.
- Pour into a greased 8-inch cake tin and chill until set. Turn out of the tin before serving.
Because this sets to quite a hard ... "thing", you might not want to leave it to cool for too long. Or else, use a very very sharp knife to cut it into slices. The Maltesers makes pretty circles when you cut into it, hehe. I suggest THIN slices. This is a VERY rich dessert. Trust me.
Of course, since I was making it to serve to people, I wanted to decorate it a little. I made a biscuit base exactly the same as the chocolate cheesecake, and also made chocolate icing to frost it, since it isn't the prettiest of cakes. Very lumpy, with all the Maltesers, hehe. Unfortunately, this was a BAD BAD idea. It does NOT need any more sweetness AT ALL. Doesn't matter how unpresentable it looks. Just serve it as it is, trust me. The biscuit base wasn't so bad, but the chocolate icing was overkill! Made it look very pretty though, hehe. But I really really really think you don't need it.
But apart from the uber-sweetness, it was fantastic! I love Maltesers, and the digestives added a nice touch to it. The chocolate was just amazing, although I might try making it with a dark chocolate next time. The milk chocolate combo was just waaaaaaayy too sweet! :P
