Walkers' Chilli Chicken

Sigh... I am so depressed. I set about making about Honey Garlic Chicken, but... :( :( :( It didn't work out! :cries: Justin tasted the honey garlic sauce, and pronounced it as edible, if a bit too much garlic. But when I tasted it, it nearly made me vomit! It was sooooo bad! I should'nt have been surprised. Justin (and Hadi) actually ate Hadi's Chicken of Death (as it is named now :P).

I don't see how it tasted sooooo bad though! :( :( :( I thought I was doing alright, sigh. But anyway, I scrapped the whole thing, decided to do a Justin and make chilli chicken :P Since I had browned the chicken earlier, I was left with a limited number of options :( Oh well, here we go!

What you need:
3 pieces chicken, drumsticks or thighs
Cornflour, for coating the chicken
2 shallots, sliced thinly
1/2 cup Thai sweet chilli sauce
1/2 cup water
3 tablespoons tomato sauce
2 tablespoons soy sauce
Garlic powder, for seasoning
Oil, for frying

What you do:
  1. Coat the chicken lightly in the cornflour.
  2. Heat up one tablespoon of oil in a wok, and add the chicken. Fry until brown all over (doesn't matter if its cooked inside or not). Place the chicken on a plate and set aside. Wipe off the wok with a kitchen towel.
  3. Heat another tablespoon of oil in the wok. Add the sliced shallots and fry until softened.
  4. Add the chilli sauce, water, tomato sauce, soy sauce and garlic powder (as much as you like). Mix well to combine.
  5. Simmer for about a minute, then add the chicken pieces.
  6. Simmer until cooked and tender, about half an hour. Add more water if necessary.
Sigh. The whole time I was cooking this, Hadi was breathing heavily over my shoulder. Adding the tomato sauce elicited a gasp of disbelief, and he could only cover his eyes when I sprinkled the garlic powder. The soy sauce, however, was met with a nod of approval, weirdly enough.

Ok, I haven't had much experience cooking with chilli sauces, but come on, my inspiration in this case was Walkers' Thai Sweet Chilli Crisps :D According to the packet, real chilli creates a gentle heat while a dash of soy sauce, onion, tomato and garlic add a delicate sweetness for a sublime taste contrast. Mmmmmm... Sounds good yeah? :D How can anything go wrong??? :D

Since the boys are HUGE fans of Thai sweet chilli sauce, they frown upon me modifying it as I like :P They pronounced it good in the end though, heh. As Hadi put it, its Thai sweet chilli sauce, how can it go wrong? ;) True true. When I mentioned it could use more tomato though, they just ignored me. Feh. :P Die-hard fans, I tell you! But anyway, the chicken turned out a bit plain looking, but a very nice golden brown (Haha, do you see the nice rice at the back??? Hadi wanted to make the rice prettier :P) :D And it was tasty too! But... well...

I was just a little bit disappointed that my Honey Garlic Chicken didn't turn out well :( :( :( I was so excited about it already! Oh well, I'll try it again!!! Where there's a will, there's a way! :D

  1. Don't feel depressed with your honey garlic chicken, andangnya tu up and down cooking (at least diorang berdua makan !) Ibu kadang2 , ngaleh-ngaleh memasak, diaorang prefer endmee pulang ('boleh makan endomee, lama sudah inda makan' excause !)

Barangkali kurang minyak..Try to (learn to !) use oil liberally....It gives taste and look. You can always remove the oil later and can use it for nasi goreng ?
